At first glance, industrial design and UX\/UI may seem like quite separate disciplines. One works with physical objects, materials, manufacturing, ergonomics, and volume. The other with screens, flows, interfaces, interaction, and digital products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But the more closely they are examined, the more evident it becomes that they share a common foundation: understanding how people use something and designing a solution that works better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The transition from industrial design to UX\/UI doesn't seem like a strange leap to me. It seems like a fairly natural evolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In industrial design, you never design just a form. You design how an object is held, how it is cleaned, how it is assembled, how it is stored, how it is understood, how it is transported, how it is manufactured, and how it ages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A physical product doesn't work well simply because it's beautiful. It has to be appropriate for its intended use. It has to be logical. It has to anticipate errors. It has to be technically feasible and understandable for the user.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The same thing happens with a digital interface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A screen doesn't work well just because it has good typography and attractive buttons. It has to guide, organize information, reduce friction, prevent errors, and allow a person to complete an action without feeling lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In both cases, design isn't just about appearance. It's about behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ergonomics in physical products is easy to understand: size, weight, posture, reach, force, comfort, safety. In digital products, ergonomics changes form, but not intent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A button that's too small, a confusing hierarchy, or a flow with too many steps can also cause discomfort. Your wrist might not hurt, but your patience will. And sometimes that's worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Designing a good interface involves considering cognitive load, clarity, visual order, accessibility, context, and frequency of use. It's another form of ergonomics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instead of asking "how do you hold it?", you ask "how do you understand it?".
Instead of \u201cwhere does the hand go?\u201d, you ask \u201cwhere does the attention go?\u201d.
Instead of \u201chow much effort does it require?\u201d, you ask \u201chow many steps are unnecessary?\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The principle is the same: adapt the design to the people, not force the people to adapt to the design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the most interesting aspects of industrial design is that it forces you to think in terms of systems. A product doesn't exist in isolation. It has parts, joints, materials, manufacturing processes, packaging, transportation, maintenance, and costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
UX\/UI also works through systems. An interface has components, states, patterns, flows, validations, messages, navigation, data, and internal rules. An isolated screen might look great, but if it doesn't fit with the rest of the system, it's not very useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This systems thinking is a very clear connection between both disciplines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a physical product, a design decision can affect the mold, assembly, or cost. In a digital product, an interface decision can affect development, the database, maintenance, or responsive behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Good design involves seeing those connections before they become problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Industrial design involves working with materials such as metal, plastic, ceramics, wood, textiles, resins, and composites. Each material has its own properties, limitations, finishes, and processing capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In UX\/UI, the materials are different: buttons, forms, cards, menus, modals, tables, icons, grids, states, and components. But the logic is similar. Each element has a function and rules of use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A good designer doesn't place a material or component arbitrarily. They choose it because it fulfills a need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A card can organize information.
A form can translate an intention into data.
A table can allow for comparison.
A button can close a decision.
An alert can prevent a mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Digital design also has its own materiality. It's not touched with the hands, but it's felt in the way the user moves forward or gets stuck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prototyping is another strong point of connection. In industrial design, prototypes are used to test proportions, assembly, ergonomics, durability, and perception. In UX\/UI, prototypes are used to test flows, hierarchies, interaction, comprehension, and navigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In both cases, the prototype serves to stop discussing things in the abstract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A physical model reveals problems that aren't visible in a rendering. A digital prototype reveals frictions that aren't visible in a static image. Until something is tested, many decisions are just well-presented assumptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And design has a complicated relationship with assumptions. They're unavoidable, but it's best to debunk them as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There are fewer and fewer products that are purely physical or purely digital. Many objects need a digital layer: a website, an app, a configurator, a management panel, a registration system, an online store, or a connected experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That's where a hybrid profile makes a lot of sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Understanding physical products helps in designing better interfaces for real products. Understanding UX\/UI helps ensure that those products don't remain isolated, but can be explained, sold, configured, managed, or expanded digitally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
An e-commerce site is not just a store. It's part of the product experience.
An internal panel is not just for administration. It's part of the work system.
A web app is not just software. It's a tool that affects a real-world routine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When these layers are well connected, the design gains depth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For me, moving from industrial design to UX\/UI doesn't mean leaving product design behind. It means expanding my scope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The design thinking remains the same: observe, understand, simplify, structure, prototype, test, and improve. What changes is the medium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes the result is an object.
Sometimes it's an interface.
Sometimes it's a web app.
Sometimes it's a plugin.
Sometimes it's a system that connects everything mentioned above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The main question isn't "Is this physical or digital?" The important question is "What problem are we solving, and how will a real person use it?".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Coming from an industrial design background brings a valuable sensibility to digital products. It helps in thinking about structure, constraints, practical use, feasibility, processes, and maintenance. It also provides a direct connection to manufacturing, materials, and detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In UX\/UI, that perspective can translate into more robust, less decorative interfaces that are more connected to the actual functioning of the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It's not just about creating clean screens. It's about designing tools that make sense, that can be built, and that continue to function when taken outside the ideal environment of the mock-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
UX\/UI is not as far removed from industrial design as it may seem. Both fields seek to streamline complexity, reduce friction, and create clearer experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One does it with objects, materials, and physical processes.
The other one does it with screens, data, and digital flows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But deep down, the intention is very similar: to design something that someone can use better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Therefore, for someone with a background in industrial design, entering the field of UX\/UI isn't starting from scratch. It's about transferring a way of thinking to a new medium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And in a context where products increasingly combine object, service, interface, web and system, that mix ceases to be a rarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
